Algarrobo celebrates its history with a historical re-enactment, accompanied by a weekend of festivities that includes food tastings, a craft market, a tapas trail and live music.
The story takes us back to 1811, specifically to 24 September, when Napoleon’s army was ordered to burn down this village in the Axarquía region. To this end, Commander Bellangé arrived in the village at the head of a company from the 58th Regiment, whilst one of the columns commanded by Captain Ricard was ambushed in Algarrobo – on 23 September – resulting in the deaths of 12 French soldiers.
Bellangé’s response was immediate, and the very next day he set out with his entire army in search of the man responsible for those deaths, José Segovia, whom he never managed to capture. The fact is that the guerrilla groups of bandits who were in power at the time were able to stand up to the armies of that era. Alongside the guerrillas, the local people reacted vigorously, appealing to the authorities for clemency, which they secured after sending a horseman to seek such clemency from the French authorities in Málaga.
